Casting a Circle

Casting a circle is the integral part in any spell or ritual. It prevents negativity from coming in and influencing your work, and creates a cone of focused power to better charge your thoughts and will.

Start by placing all your tools, and any other object you will need within the area where you plan to cast your circle. Once the circle is cast, you cannot leave for any reason, so make sure you have everything you will need within arms reach. After your tools are placed in their positions on your altar, take a broom and sweep clockwise around your altar. As you do this, chant aloud:

Out all negatives, In all positives

Once you have finished sweeping the circle, stand before your altar and clear your mind of everything except the ritual or spell you are about to do. Allow yourself to be calm and focused before stating:

The Ritual has begun

Next, light your pillar candle and incense and begin acknowledging and receiving the Elements to your space, beginning with the East. Take your dagger, and facing East, angle it towards the ground and draw your circle in the air, circling back to the East. As you do, say this aloud:

I draw this circle to the Goddess and her Cohort, So they may come forth and bless their Child

Raise your arms with the dagger in your dominate/power hand and say:

In a time that is not a time, In a place that is not a place, I stand before the Threshold between the veils. I call the Old Ones to protect my circle and myself so that I may walk along beside thee, along the path of light and night. By the light of the moon and the depth of the stars, I command thee with this blade. Guide me in this circle and bless me with your wisdom.

Hold the dagger down towards the chalice and lightly dip the tip into the water:

I call upon the Goddess to bless this water. May the water represent the symbol of Water and purify all that I wish.

Hold the dagger down towards the dish of salt:

I call upon the Goddess to bless this salt. May the salt represent the symbol of Earth and ground my power and focus.

Hold the dagger in the smoke from the incense:

I call upon the Goddess to bless this smoke. May the smoke represent the symbol of Air and purify all that I touch.

Hold the dagger lightly against the charcoal:

I call upon the Goddess to bless this coal. May the coal represent the symbol of Fire and ignite the power within myself.

Take the burner and circle the altar three times while chanting:

Air and Fire I conjure thee, protect this circle and ward off evil. Expose those spirits that harm and burn all thought against myself.

Light the taper candle and use its flame to light the East candle. With the dagger in your dominate/power hand trace the pentagram over the candle and say:

Lords and Ladies of the East, Guardians of the Watchtower of the East, those of the Element of Air, I summon thee to protect this circle and all within.

Use the taper candle and use its flame to light the South candle. With the dagger in your dominate/power hand trace the pentagram over the candle and say:

Lords and Ladies of the South, Guardians of the Watchtower of the South, those of the Element of Fire, I summon thee to protect this circle and all within.

Use the taper candle and use its flame to light the West candle. With the dagger in your dominate/power hand trace the pentagram over the candle and say:

Lords and Ladies of the West, Guardians of the Watchtower of the West, those of the Element of Water, I summon thee to protect this circle and all within.

Light the taper candle and use its flame to light the North candle. With the dagger in your dominate/power hand trace the pentagram over the candle and say:

Lords and Ladies of the North, Guardians of the Watchtower of the North, those of the Element of Earth, I summon thee to protect this circle and all within.

Use the snuffer to put out the taper, and lay them next to the dagger. Your circle is now complete.
